Molecular Lanthanide Switches for Magnetism and Photoluminescence

Solvation of [(CNT)Ln(η8-COT)] (Ln=La, Ce, Nd, Tb, Er; CNT=cyclononatetraenyl, i.e., C9H9−; COT=cyclooctatetraendiid, C8H82−) complexes with tetrahydrofuran (THF) gives rise to neutral [(η4-CNT)Ln(thf)2(η8-COT)] Ce) and ionic [Ln(thf)x(η8-COT)][CNT] (x=4 (Ce, Tb), 3 (Er)) species in a solid-to-solid transformation. Due the severe distortion ligand sphere upon solvation, these act as switchable luminophores single-molecule magnets. The desolvation coordinated solvents can be triggered by applying dynamic vacuum, well temperature gradient stimulus. Raman spectroscopic investigations revealed fast fully reversible solvation processes. Moreover, we also show that Nd:YAG laser induce necessary for self-sufficient switching process Ce(III) analogue spatially resolved manner.

A rapid, mild and high-yield microwave synthesis of 1D isotypical [Ln(H4bmt)(H5bmt)(H2O)2]·3H2O coordination polymers is presented. The La(3+)-based material is highly active as a heterogeneous catalyst in the methanolysis of styrene oxide at nearly room temperature.
